Sound grabbed on my iPhone during a visit to Etruria Industrial Museum on Etruria Canals Festival weekend 2022.
The festival returns next weekend.

Princess - the sound of bygone industry
The clap and clank of iron on iron. The whirring and grinding of gears and axles. The deep rumble of the machine’s vibrations in the bricks and stones of the industrial building. These sounds are the same today as they were in the mid nineteenth century. These are the sounds of Princess, Etruria Industrial Museum’s beam engine and the mechanisms she drives.
“Princess is a double acting condensing rotative beam engine to the design of James Watt. She was purchased second hand and installed when the mill was built in 1856/7. Her previous history is unknown but she was transported from Eccles near to Manchester and was almost certainly built by Bateman and Sherratt of Salford, Manchester in the 1820s.” Etruria Industrial Museum website.
Hear Princess for yourself. She’ll be in steam again 12.30pm to 4.30pm during this year’s Etruria Canals Festival, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June. Admission charges apply to enter the museum.

Etruria Canals Festival
The theme of this year’s canals festival is ‘Transitions’.
“Alongside the historic narrowboat gathering there will be a range of family friendly workshops, performances, craft stalls and exhibitors, beer tent and street food. This year’s theme is TRANSITIONS thinking about the changes the site and communities have seen and imaging what transitions we can explore together.” Etruria Canals Festival website.
The festival is free to attend and open 11am to 5pm on both days. It takes place in and around the museum grounds, with the popular ‘historic narrowboat gathering’ taking place on the moorings where the two canals meet.
