Prestigious event sees city herald a new era of cultural ambition
Leaders from across the UK’s business, civic, education, culture, and creative worlds joined philanthropists and diaspora from Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire at the Victoria and Albert museum in London, on December 6, to hail an exciting new era in The Potteries’ cultural life, and to launch Stoke-on-Trent’s bid for World Craft City status.
The Stoke Creates event was hosted by London’s Stoke-born Deputy Mayor for Culture and Creative Industries, Justine Simons OBE, and the Director of the V&A, Dr Tristram Hunt, a former Stoke-on-Trent MP.
The event put a spotlight on Stoke-on-Trent’s newfound confidence as a leading city of crafts, artistry, innovation, and industry.
Attendees heard news from Stoke Creates’ invited speakers of recent investment and philanthropic commitment which will help unleash the potential of The Potteries through creativity.

Arts Council England awards £100,000 to The Potteries as part of its

Society of Staffordshire Artists Exhibition at The Brampton Museum
The Society of Staffordshire Artists presents the SSA Christmas Exhibition at The Brampton Museum, Newcastle-under-Lyme, from 9th December to 4th February.
Celebrating 100 years, this showcase features renowned artists, with a private view on Thursday 14th December 6-8pm, opened by Potteries poet Nick Degg.
Explore paintings and sculptures by esteemed society members, attend workshops, engage with artists, and enjoy an audio-described tour.
All exhibited works are available for purchase, and more art by these talents can be found on the SSA website.
John Thirlwall, President of the SSA said: “This exhibition will present a variety of artistic styles, some which can be appreciated for their immediate aesthetic value and others to challenge visitors to find messages within.”
Malcolm Hague, Vice-President, said: “We encourage our artists to develop and promote their work in a variety of ways, including exhibitions in the best regional places and by digital means.
