The Culture Box Live exhibition, which opened today at the Airspace Gallery in Hanley, is a multi-media and multi-sensory event emphasising the importance of creativity in dementia care.
This exhibition is based on research findings and artist commissions from a pandemic-responsive arts and dementia project.
The vision of the Culture Box project was to alleviate the negative impacts of the pandemic, such as social isolation and loneliness, on people living with dementia in care homes. It focused on using interactive creative resources. The project's outcomes for the future involve using the findings and materials to develop training activities for artists and care staff to improve dementia care and reach new audiences.
Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and supported by various partners, it features a blend of art, research, and interactive activities.
If you’re a carer for someone living with dementia, whether in a professional care setting or at home, the exhibition has a wealth of examples of creative activities to explore. Project staff are also in attendance to share their experiences and to encourage you to give creativity a go! The are a number of ‘quiet viewing’ slots available too, maybe ideal to bring along the person you’re caring for.
On Thursday 1st February there’s a workshop for artists and creative practitioners that may be considering leading creative projects for people with dementia (contact Dr Chloe Asker if you’re interested in taking part: c.asker@surrey.ac.uk) - also details on the exhibition page linked below.
The exhibition at Airspace gallery (opposite the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery) runs to February 4, 2024, offering a unique experience similar to its preceding event in Exeter.
